Copic markers vs the others…. Copic markers have become a popular tool of illustrators, stampers, card makers and artists everywhere. Copic markers are different than other markers in their applications and in their cost. Try them and you’ll see the difference!
What makes Copic markers are different
- All of the markers can be refilled with ink and come with replaceable nibs or tips.
- The labeling on the side of the markers is embossed so will not rub off.
- The ink in the Copics is an alcohol based dye ink. This formula allows you to blend the colors together without tearing up your paper like a water-based ink.
- The ink has a guaranteed color consistency so you know your colors will always match and color smoothly.
- As the alcohol evaporates the ink becomes acid free so it works great on paper.
- The markers have a three-year shelf life. Closed tightly, sitting on a shelf they will still be good after three years.
There are four types of Copic Markers: copic, sketch, ciao and wide. I purchase the type I need as I need them, but if you have the finances, try all types and you will figure out which work best for your style. I personally use the Copic type more than the other types.
Copic Marker Show their value in the Blending
The magic of these markers is in blending the colors together. With a little time and effort, your can bring skin tones to life and create a 3D look and feel to your illustrations. Warning: Be careful if you use Sharpies in your illustrations, Copic will smear when used with Sharpies!

Copic Pens
Copic makes sketch pens called multiliners. There are 2 different styles of these pens. The Copic Multiliner is a great sketch pen that ranges in size from .03mm to 1.0mm and also comes in 2 brush sizes. The ink is waterproof and compatible with Copic markers. They come in black and 5 other colors. If you already have a favorite pen, test it out with your Copics. If ink doesn’t spread, get fuzzy, smear or bleed then your pen will work with Copics.
Paper
I use Strathmore Bristol Board – Smooth Surface. You will find it available at any art supply store. Be sure to keep your eye out for sales, I’ve personally found the board on sale at half price. That’s when I buy as much as I can at the time.
